Salsa and The Weekend Before the Storm

First of all, Salsa.  It was actually not as bad as I thought. It was me, Patricia, Kerri, Ricardo, and Megan at Don Pablos, which is normally a Mexican restaurant but closes on certain nights for this sort of dancing.  After watching those who thought they knew what they were doing, but obviously sucked(along with a pair that put us all to shame), I figured I couldnt look any worse than those out there.  I have to note: I was the one of the group who actually had the urge to get up first.  Never could get Ricardo or Kerri to dance, but Im glad the rest of us at least tried.   Or the others tried to teach me anyways.  I sucked to say the least, but I still had a great time. Truthfully, my only real mistake was leaving.  Ricardo called a friend and they ditched us, then Kerri wanted to leave. In hindsight, I think even though it would have been kind of rude to not leave with my ride(like Ricardo), it would have been a lot more fun if I had stayed. I am horrible at this on the spot decision making thing.   Damnit.

The rest of this weekend was pretty uneventful.   Just the NFL Draft to listen to half assed to check for Texas Tech guys.  Carlos Francis went 99th to Oakland, and BJ Symons 248th to Houston. Wes should have been drafted...Yeah, its sad that I kept track and actually remember parts of it, along with watchingish the Busch race, then the Cup race today. Speaking of which...

  NASCAR News.
Annoyed the Jeff pulled it off, but kind of glad the DEI cars were shut down.  Now we can all get a break from the hype the media puts up about them. Now that they've lost, maybe they will work together again.     Impressed by Casey Mears and unimpressed by Tony Stewart. Sucked that Rusty got caught up in Tony's mess.     Funny quote though:

"But Kurt and I get along good. I sure didn't want that to happen to him or anybody else. If you look at our track record in restrictor-place racing, I don't think we've caused too many wrecks in our career."-Tony Stewart

The only thing that saved my sanity was basketball.  Both evenings this weekend I've played until I couldn't play no more.  Its a good way to get out energy before you want to kill someone.    Especially with my test tomorrow morning and studying for finals beginning towards the end of this weekend.  This was my last 'free' weekend.  Possibly my last for a long time.   Yeah Ive got those fun activities Thurs and Fri, but with the stress level building, its not enough. Wish we could have played football though..

I need to stop putting off this studying thing. In a little over 2 weeks I'll be moving out and going back to hell... I mean Houston. I dont really want to leave Lubbock right now, not when I'm actually starting to meet cool people.  What if my decision takes me away from this desert-like hell hole and I never see them again?  It'll be like leaving Singapore all over again.

But I guess I shouldnt whine more about my lack of decision making skills again right now.  We'll save that for later, inbetween studying for finals.  Besides, I forgot what else I was going to put here.   So until next time..

Dancing Again

Some crazy girls that I met on a Habitat trip talked me into going salsa dancing with them.  Deja vu?  Not quite, but the coincidence is kind of funny.  Should be interesting...

Saw a bunch of footage from a Led Zepplin concert in History of Rock and Roll, that definitely improved my mood.

Good stuff.   My ride has arrived, I must go.

No Attempt at a witty subject. Just: Entry

Today was probably THE worst day I have ever had in college. No, its not because we lost the first playoff game in Softball. It didn't have to do with classes, or having to talk to people who sit at desks. No, none of that mattered today.  Today, I heard about Hector. Officially he was my friend's former roommate's best friend, but we all hung out together. We were like a close dorm floor, except less than half of us came from the same dorm. We just hung out in one apartment, played football inside and outside. Went to the Texas Tech football and basketball games, and bugged the hell out of them when they spent long hours on their architect projects. I didn't know Hector as a close friend, but we all knew him and had a great time together.   We planned to have one last game of football over in the big field before school ended.   Hector was our quarterback.  Today I found out that he died this past friday from injuries suffered in a car crash that occurred during Easter break.
We'll remember you Hecto, Go 'Chankees'!

A Long Long Time Ago, In A Country Far Away

Suddenly Im writing two entries in three days.  Why the inconsistancy?   Simple. It all depends on what happens and what I think of. In this case, its what Johnny thinks of. He came up with the great idea of getting the group together again. How long has it been? 3-4 years? Angela, Johnny, Brian, Airy, Kim, Christi, Sam, and T.   I seriously doubt we'd be able to get all of us in one place now that we are literally scattered across the nation.  Although they are infinitely closer than when I left them back in Singapore, in some ways we are even farther apart.  But it would be awesome to meet up again. The original idea calls for us to get together next Thanksgiving, but that could change possibly.

Its been a long time since Ive swing danced..

Guess I'd better sleep now.   Thats my news flash for the day and week probably.
Until next time

Side Note: Klaus Graf kicks ass. I have to make sure and say this before he becomes the first German to win a NASCAR race because it will happen. Career stats: 1 ARCA race Led until the end, Finished 3rd.(First oval track race)  Gets first cup start in a couple of months.   Take that F1.

NASCAR, Art, and Music; Oh yeah and a few hot girls (That should get your attention)

Yeah, Its been a long while since I put anything down.  I've kind of been avoiding it on purpose in a way. Even though I figure its rare for someone to even glance at this page, I look back on my past posts and wince.  From now on I'll just cover my eyes and not scroll down.   Yeah, that'll work.
Whats happened in the past 2 weeks? Quite a bit actually, for me anyways.

First of all, the NASCAR race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway was awesome. I had a great time, even though I realized how much of a redneck I am. Especially with Tyler standing beside me criticizing the people around me and me thinking 'Hey, I like that too'.    Yeah, I got sunburnt on my neck, so its official.   Most embarrassing point of the weekend: We heard a bunch of hootin' an' hollerin' a few tentsites down from us, closer to the frontage road next to I-35N.  My mom wanted to know what all the excitement was about. Five seconds later I realized she was actually over there, so I ran over to retrieve her, figuring correctly what the noise was for. My dad followed me.  Picture 20 guys sitting on truck beds, truck hoods, chairs, and whatever else that had enough room for them to sit on. What else would they be yelling to the passerby besides derogatory comments at cars adorned with the wrong driver flags?  I didnt get them away in time, so now I can ashamedly say that I saw a couple of girls stripped in the cab of a passing truck with my parents beside me.  At least they were good looking girls.   Parents laughed for quite some time..

I wont stretch out the rest of my race weekend because, frankly, y'all probably don't want to hear about it. It'd be a bunch of babble about cars racing in circles by an obessed racing freak.
Anyways, heres where the guys I root for finished.

Rusty: 4th - Above average when looking back over the last year.  You'll win one yet Rusty!
ESad: 1st - Hell yes, by 0.28 seconds over Kasey Kahne. Go Elliott!
Mears: 7th - Ties his best finish ever.  I guess Im biased since I was a big fan of his uncle Rick, but I knew he'd learn how to drive, and he'll win before the year is out, despite the Target on his hood.

Moving on...Actually a dull week overall as far as classes go.  Took a test that I convinced myself I was ready for, and hung out with different people.   I'm currently trying to get out of the rut that is my routine and meet new people. I've partially succeeded, but still have a ways to go. To be continued..

Ugh: I discovered during the week that Thursday was the date to sign up for classes. Most people have been visiting their advisor and/or counselor.   I don't really have either considering the situation I've put myself into.   The question is still up in the air.     One day maybe I'll explain it all.   One day. Hopefully thats the same day I figure it all out. May that day come soon..

Now for this past weekend.. Now some of y'all know I live in Lubbock.  One of those citites that literally has at least 1 or 2 churches within sight from any spot in the city. Its also a city where the 'downtown' is smaller than the campus, and the majority of the residents go 'home' out of town for holidays. I just saw my parents a week ago, so no need for a 9 hour drive, or a plane flight, coupled with the fact that I dont really celebrate Easter. But thats a whole 'nother story in its self. After I drove a handful of friends to the airport in my sisters car, or their car. And gave directions to the airport to another handful of freshmen who wanted to put their cars in the Lubbock International Airport(One flight a week I think goes to Mexico, so that makes it "International") because they heard it was hailing that night. I emphasize they are freshman because obviously the thought hasnt crossed them that even when it 'hails' in Lubbock, it feels like hard rain, if for some reason it doesnt melt and dissipate before it hits the ground.

Anyways, after I did all that I had nothing to do. Absolutely nothing. Sure I had homework, but that was done in a flash.  What now? I pretty much sat on my butt for the next 24 hours until about 530pm.   Thank you Marc for getting me out.  A friend of a friend who wanted to go with someone to an art show/party. Of course I said 'sure'. The most exciting thing I had was a computer and tv.  Trust me, they arent as entertaining as they look, especially with the thought of a practically empty dorm in mind.   So I went to the Wheeler Bros. art show 'downtown'. A small building that used to hold 4 small businesses. To get to different rooms with art in them, you walked out the door, down to the next door, and back inside again. It was actually pretty cool art and interesting stuff.  We checked out the art til about 7pm, then we tailgated(yes, we tailgated at an art show in the middle of a city) outside it and people watched and generally had a good time with a couple others.  Then we drove to a place for dinner and returned to hang out again.  Not only is this place a show, its also a party. Holiday Inn catered and in one of the rooms, local bands played up in a loft overlooking the growing crowd in the tiny area. We stuck around and talked to Marc's art friends and stayed for the bands we heard were pretty good.    Pretty good was an understatement.  Los Sonsofbitches was an awesome 'country' band("We are country, really. We just take the try out of country"). The main guitar/singer was one of the Wheelers(who also had a room of art). I was somewhat amused at the fact that his parents were there to hear him and his band, especially considering the bands name. The drummer was a good looking girl that was actually really, really good.    Me and Marc bought a CD to share.  Good stuff.  Another 'performer' was a supposedly well known poet from Dallas. He looked like..no, he was a drunk, an old drunk that someone picked up off a dirt road on the way over.  He read his poems from an aging yellow pad. He was a pretty amusing guy and his poetry was good if you have the ability to tolerate derogatory terms and obscene topics. The other memorable band was the last one, Watermelonfastbass.   Im positive the country-looking singer was completely insane. Their music was anything but country though.  The only thing I can really compare it to is System of a Down. Some real hard rock type of stuff, mixed in with other things. It was really refreshing to just stand around and listen to some good music. Unfortunately it got to the point where you were dodging drunken people who were staggering towards the door and it was obvious it was time to go before we became a victim of a drunk driving accident.   Fortunately Lubbock uses a grid system, so theres only one road in the entire city besides the loop that curves..

Thanks again Marc.

Yesterday I went to lunch with my sister and her friend's family out in Tahoka.  Another town-ish area in the middle of nowhere, and hung out with my sister for a good part of the day, and again today, just to wear down the hours.

So thats essentially what I've been up to in the past two weeks, summarized I guess. I cant really complain too much, since I got what I wanted a couple of Sundays ago, and on Saturday. A good time, and hanging out with different people.
My not so professional advice: Go out and do something you haven't done before.   Things like an art show may not sound appealing but they can be a lot of fun.

Back to my cardboard box I call life.  Or something like that.

My New Neighbor, Boris

Couldnt get to sleep tonight, so I just stare at the walls and ceiling. I can entertain myself on just about any subject I think, and this time its a spider that decided to cross the room.   Reminds me of one The Who's better songs. Except this Boris made it out alive because spiders are more interesting than scary to me..

"Boris The Spider" by The Who

Look, he's crawling up my wall
Black and hairy, very small
Now he's up above my head
Hanging by a little thread

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Now he's dropped on to the floor
Heading for the bedroom door
Maybe he's as scared as me
Where's he gone now, I can't see

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

There he is wrapped in a ball
Doesn't seem to move at all
Perhaps he's dead, I'll just make sure
Pick this book up off the floor

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

He's come to a sticky end
Don't think he will ever mend
Never more will he crawl 'round
He's embedded in the ground

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Candy Bars Gone Wild and The Desecrated Powerade Bottle

Yes, those wild candy bars are out there, hiding under you bed. Ah, the fun random things I come up with on the spur of the moment.    Kim you really made my day.  Just keep them away from the peanuts and they wont multiply as quickly.      Evil candy bars..     It'll join The Pebble in my memory banks as one of those random things that pop into mind.

Yeah I know, Im running this one short.   Speaking of running, I think I'll go do that after this.   Not quite 2am, the best time. Wooo!     Yeah Im upbeat, nothing can get me too far down for more than a minute because, thats right, that NASCAR race is coming up! and I'll be there! I cant wait, if you havent noticed. Good times I hope, even though parents will be with me.   Ah well, they'll keep me out of trouble.   I might 'accidently' offend a Gordon fan, or a Kurt Busch fan.   Actually that'd be amusing....NO! bad QT, no conspiring against those poor, poor people. Pity them.

My small rant for this evening has to do with dip in the classroom.  I understand Im in Texas and a large number of kids around my age dip, but its disgusting and unbearable when you enter class and someone sits there and spits into a powerade bottle every 30 seconds. Especially during a quiz.   Its like someone smoking indoors in the classroom, except instead of smoke, its the sound of someone spitting into a bottle quickly turning a sickly color.  I wont name names, namely because I dont know the name of the guy I happened to sit next to during my math quiz.  He did tell me it was his first time in class in a month and its his second time in the course.   I think back to our recent test and smile at his probable absence. I will never know why people think its something to brag about. I dont want to hear about you burning your life savings because class isnt exciting.      Arg.      If only dip somehow set off alarms, or something, so it wont be allowed. Yuck.

Im done.   Time for some runnin and sleep.   I need to find someone tomorrow in a couple classes to get a copy of notes from, because Im thinking Im catching some kind of bug. Yep, I can feel it growing inside of me, it will be a full blown disease by Friday and I wont be able to make it to my lecture. NASCAR fever.    The best sickness known to mankind.

Take A Hike, Literally

Yesterday evening I was told, no ordered, to fill the car up with gas after I used it (older sister's car. she also lives on campus). I forgot, so it became my job to walk back across campus, fill it up, and walk back to my room.    What a waste of time, right?  Why should I do this? Afterall, she ran it low so that I would have to in the first place. Taking advantage of the little brother who has the 'emergency'(food/gasish) credit card.  Bleh.     My first thought is refusal, make it out into a sad sibling squawl or something, but in the end I decided I'd go ahead and do it. What the hell, its only a 15 minute walk. Hmmm....walk? Why don't I go running? You know, that sport I loved way back when, and, even though I was slower than molasses, I got more satisfaction out of finishing a race, or just a course than passing a hard exam. Or anything for that matter. Running is a great thing to do, and I practically forgot about it for almost a year.   So thats what I did last night, I ran around campus, did my chore, and continued running.  My guess is between 4-5 miles, but it didnt really matter how far.  I suggest to all of y'all who don't right now, to go running.    And remind me to keep this thing going, its good for me.    Besides, I got to leave a nice smell for my sister this morning in retaliation.  Sweet, sweet revenge.     Oh how I love running.

News Flash: Green Grass Discovered In Lubbock; Citizens Paint Another House Purple In Protest

Nah, of course that news flash isnt real, but there is some truth to the statement.  I leave for a week and suddenly the barren lands inbetween buildings are showing signs of green, the type of green youd never expect to find in a place like Lubbock.  I also just like to poke fun at the fact that TTU students protest everything, and the Purple house is one of their most famous ones.      Ask me later if you want to know, Its as interesting as just about everything else here, which isnt very.

Anyways after a random start Im off to the past week's events.  I left Lubbock with 8 others to help build on some houses for Habitat for Humanity out in Belen, New Mexico along with other volunteers from John Brown Univ and TCU.     Before you start thinking 'This dude is off his rocker, wasting a spring break trip to go work out in the sun for 5 days', hear me out. It was the best trip I've been on in quite some time, and definitely surpassed my expectations. In short, yes, its worth it.

Sure it was almost the same as Lubbock, dusty and hotter than well, hot in the daytime, and cold at night.  Typical desertish stuff.  But this time we have hillish mountain things. That alone makes the trip worthwhile after living in Houston and Lubbock, both of which are not known for their inclines and wannabe hills.

Now that Im past the landscape, theres the company. 8 other Tech Habitat members in a van for 6 hours on the way there, then living and working together until sunday afternoon. I was kind of worried because I tend to be the quiet person who finds their way into a far corner and just watches everyone else, but I really got to know them all well and I forgot I was supposed to be shy for a short while. Going into the trip I only really knew Paul, but afterwards Im proud to say I know them all, and I met a few from the TCU bunch as well.  Hanging out under the stars until 530ish at night (I wont mention the star-gazing with JBU because they pretty much isolated themselves besides, and that Brian guy was kind of creepy.), playing and winning at Guestures, then playing and losing miserably at Spoons, and making fun of Paul for admitting one of his favorite channels is Disney. Im sorry for all you Disney lovers out there, but its funny for a 20 year old male, who looks like hes almost 25 admitting he watches Hilary Duff shows and...ah well you get the point.  Just had to be there. I wont let him forget it until he finds a decent comeback.

Heres the part where I rant for just a little bit. The only couple of things that kind of ticked me off was the lack of socializing by my fellow Texas Tech volunteers.  Besides Paul, Brandon and I (considered the quietest of the group), the rest of them barely left their motel rooms outside of our work hours. It was sad to have to force 6 of 9 to get their butt over to play a game with another school and get to know them a little better. To me it made us look almost as bad as JBU seemed, and we were the private school. The snobs like JBU(for the most part, sorry JBU, but thats what you came across as, Katy certainly didnt help the image) are supposed to be a stereotypical private school, and heres 9 TCU girls trying to be friendly while TTU sits around and makes excuses as to why they shouldnt leave their bedrooms (which stunk of....something).   The other half of my rant also incluudes, for the most part, those same TTU mates.  We never really got anywhere because they wanted to sit and talk for 2 extra hours at the dinner table, or in the van when we're parked at the motel instead of getting out.   It was really ridiculous and wasted a lot of our time.   Hopefully next time we'll come prepared and actually plan things out.

Ok, now Im moving on to the reason I was there, Habitat. Working on the different things was great, and our supervisors made it fun. Of the 3 I worked under, 2 had to be in their 70s and I dont remember how old TG said he was, but he wasnt exactly young.  But I think that made them all the more fun to be around. They were old enough to have the experience and patience with us, yet they werent too old and senile to kick our butts when something wrong happened. As they put it, 'we don't make mistakes, we make adjustments'. Frank and his love for sheet rock was definitely a highlight in itself.   For all the complaining Philip, Jocelyn and I did after 2 straight days of it, it really was pretty interesting pretty cool to do.   Theres always too much of a good thing though, and Im glad we finally tiptoed away when he wasnt looking and found other jobs. I think Frank made me laugh the hardest this past week. When you see a really old guy running around giving instructions then out of the blue says 'we need a T - Square....Tee Hee' in a high pitched voice.   Man, you had to be there.... Shhh, I know Im entertained easily.
So many little stories to tell, but I dont really feel like writing them down, and besides they wouldnt make as much sense to yall and wouldnt really have the meaning unless you were there.   It really was a great feeling to work on those houses for people who need them and have a great time instead of sleeping in every night and accomplishing nothing. In my opinion it would have beat any trip to South Padre. To all of yall who can only have a 'great' weekend by getting trashed using alcohol and what have you, you should really try something like this.  There are better ways to make use of your time than wasting your money on that crap. :)
